American Horticultural Society

American Horticultural Society (www.ahs.org)

The AHS is one of the oldest gardening organizations in the country, and is dedicated to “providing responsible horticultural information to people of all ages.” Operating since 1922, AHS provides high quality gardening and horticulture education. Their web site at http://www.ahs.org/ contains a wealth of resources and information.

AHS “accomplishes its task both in print-members receive The American Gardener magazine-and in person: the AHS's Master Gardener program is one of the best ways home gardeners can get answers to their gardening questions. Members can also participate in the seed exchange program, as well as a variety of other functions, programs, and tours.”

AHS sponsors a number of horticulture awards. To see the 2006 list of winners, click on this link http://www.ahs.org/awards/2006_winners.htm.

AHS' headquarters is located at River Farm, one of George Washington's original five farms, in Alexandria, VA. River Farm is 25 acres located on the Potomac River, containing beautiful gardens as well as a wide variety of wildlife. However, River Farm is much more than a beautiful landscape -- it serves as the Society's showcase for its national programs and policies.
