Christmas gifts for the family gardener can be found at garden centers, hardware and discount stores.

Christmas is the perfect time of year to show the gardener how much he or she is appreciated. Gardeners generally have big hearts and ask for little or nothing in return for the kindness they show others throughout the year. What better way to say thank you than to resupply their garden shed or replace worn out tools?

Below is a list of gardener friendly gifts that are sure to please any gardener.

Indoor

  • Garden Books/Magazine Subscriptions

Add to the gardener's library with updated garden books or magazine subscriptions.

  • Garden Journal

Purchase a durable journal for tracking all garden happenings throughout the year. Add this to a gift basket along with a colorful pen.

  • Herb Plants

Many herbs will live indoors through the winter if set in a sunny window. They may then be transplanted into the herb garden in spring. A few of these include; basil, lemon balm, marjoram, mint, oregano, parsley, tarragon and thyme. Asian greens may also be grown indoors if given enough light.

Outdoor

  • Garden Cart

Carts for hauling tools, plants, compost and other essentials around the work area make tough jobs easier to handle.

  • Scoops

Scoops made of plastic or stainless steel in varying sizes for scooping potting soil and fertilizers.

  • Soaker Hoses

A gardener can never have too many soaker hoses. These hoses save water by applying it where it is needed rather than spraying it into the air where it evaporates.

  • Soil Tester

Found in garden centers a soil tester allows gardeners to keep track of soil health.

  • Tomato Cages

Purchase wire cages or build in-row cages from one-by-twos and twine to keep plants from sprawling on ground.

  • Grow Lights

  • Heat Mats

Heat mats are used to produce bottom heat for seeds and seedlings when starting them indoors.

  • Newspaper Pot Maker

Found at garden centers and in garden catalogs, these handy 'tools' create seed starting pots from newspaper which can be buried right in the ground with seedlings in the spring.

  • Plant Markers

These can be as simple as plastic spoons or knives with plant names written with a Sharpie® pen to expensive engraved copper tags.

  • Pots

Plastic pots are inexpensive and suitable for seed starting.

  • Seed Starting ‘Greenhouse’

Found in garden centers, these trays are usually filled with peat 'pods' and have a clear top. Many have built in watering trays.
